About

Calvin is a Chinese-New Zealand film director and the founding member of the Pan-Asian Screen Collective, where he champions better representation for unsung voices in front of and behind the camera. His work blends sharp storytelling with a strong sense of identity, often balancing heart, humour, and a healthy dose of chaos.

He co-created and directed the award-winning action-comedy Give Me Babies, which took out Best Comedy at the New Zealand Television Awards and earned him a Best Director nomination. He has directed episodes of Small Town Scandal (Prime/BBC), The Han Chronicles (TVNZ), and the Roseanne Liang’s Friday Night Bites (Flat3 Productions).

His films have travelled widely: Love is Real! premiered at the New Zealand International Film Festival before being featured by Short of the Week and Omeleto. Buttons and Dumplings was nominated for Best Film at the Academy Award-qualifying Show Me Shorts and premiered internationally at DOC NYC, the largest documentary festival in the US. His latest short, The Whole Thing, is due for release soon.

Calvin is also the founder and Creative Director of Eyes and Ears, a production company behind major campaigns for brands like Air New Zealand, Mercury, Kiwibank and Samsung.
